Family Ties

Sanjeev Thakur

Family Ties is an ongoing project documenting the lives of my family in Manila and Ahmedabad. It is a family album of images that I feel offers an intimate look at the simple joys and comfortable dynamics of my family.

Growing up in Manila, I have become accustomed to my father’s side of the family. Though Indian, our practices and lifestyle show hints of American influenced Filipino culture. I know I have family scattered across the globe who have grown up similarly. In 2010, I returned to India after 10 years to try to get in touch with my roots and culture. I reconnected with my relatives in Ajmer, Ahmedabad, and Delhi. My cousins, aunts, and uncles, were eager to get to know me and to find out what I had been doing the past years.

With this project, I hope to get in touch with more of my relatives and put together a family album, and trace the branches of my family tree to better understand my heritage.
